Help me choose a speed

Match the speed to your household

Don’t choose on the speed number alone. Think about how many people and devices are online at once, plus video quality, gaming, work calls and uploads. If several of those happen at the same time, a higher tier may give you more headroom. If your use is lighter, a lower-cost option may be enough.

  • Suggested

    Good for everyday use

Browsing, email, social media and lighter streaming.

  • Suggested

    Good for streaming and work

High-definition streaming, regular video calls and several connected devices.

  • Suggested

    Good for busy homes

Multiple streams at once, gaming, larger downloads and heavier work-from-home use.

Answer both questions to see which profile fits your household.

Performance

What affects your internet speed

The speed you get can vary with the access technology, line conditions, network demand, your plan, connected devices, Wi-Fi coverage, equipment and the servers you use.

  1. Your connection

The access technology at your address and the condition of the line.

  2. Network demand

How busy the network is, especially in the evening, and the speed tier on your plan.

  3. Inside your home

Your modem, Wi-Fi coverage and how many devices are connected at once.

  4. Where you connect

The websites, apps and servers you use. Each has its own capacity limits.

Typical evening speed information refers to the busy period stated for each product and comes from the approved product record.

Modem and home Wi-Fi

Good Wi-Fi starts with where the modem sits

A suitable modem or router connects the service. Its position and the layout of your home affect your Wi-Fi, so if you can, put it somewhere open and central.

Bigger or harder-to-cover homes may benefit from extra Wi-Fi coverage equipment, available only where it’s listed in the live catalogue.

Before you connect

The plan card and order flow tell you whether a modem is included, required or available at an extra cost.

  • Check whether your existing modem is compatible with the service
  • Place it in an open, central spot rather than a cupboard or corner
  • Ask about extra coverage equipment if your home is large or hard to cover
  • Check who owns the equipment and whether you’ll need to return it

Once you order, we confirm we can connect your address, give you the activation details and explain any equipment or appointment you’ll need.

  1. 01

    Order and confirm

We confirm we can connect your address before your order is accepted.

  2. 02

    Activation details

We explain activation, equipment and any appointment or technician visit.

  3. 03

    Connect and check

Plug in your equipment and check the new service is working.

  4. 04

    Cancel the old service

Once the new service is working, cancel with your previous provider. Where that applies, it’s your step to take.

Keep your old service running until the new one is working, unless your order confirmation says otherwise.

During a power outage

Most internet and internet-based voice services need power at your premises. Without suitable backup power, the service may not work during an outage.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Plain answers about speed, equipment and changing your mind.

What’s a typical evening speed?

It’s a measure that helps you compare fixed broadband performance during the busy evening period stated for the product. It’s not a guaranteed speed for every connection or every moment.

Do I need a new modem?

It depends on the service, the technology and whether your existing equipment is compatible. The plan card and order process show whether equipment is included, required or available at extra cost.

Can I use the service to work from home?

Many home plans support everyday remote work. Whether one suits you depends on your apps, security requirements, upload needs and how much you rely on staying connected. For critical work, a business service or backup connection may be more appropriate.

What happens during a power outage?

Most internet and internet-based voice services need power at your home. Unless you have suitable backup power and the network stays available, the service may not work during an outage.

Can I cancel if I change my mind?

It depends on how the service was sold and the terms that apply. These set your cancellation rights, charges and any cooling-off period. Check your order summary and talk to us before you cancel.
